How witnessing violence harms children's mental health
The biggest terror attacks from years 2015 and 2016, which occurred in the biggest European capitals, were followed by bombing in Manchester Arena last year. It happened in May, 2017 during Ariana Grande's concert. During the terror attack, 11 people died and another 59 people were seriously injured. After the incident, the message about attack ran over the world through media. They were searching for details and news were full of threats about terrorists and other possible attacks. There was a case of small girl from the United States, which saw the whole incident of shooting and bombing in news. She stayed completely shocked and her mother was scared what happened to her. She could not sleep whole night and when she had to wake up to school, she was anxious. Her mother asked her what had happened to her and the small girl responded: "I'm scared mommy. If I go to school, will somebody come in and shoot me? I don't want to die." (The Conversation, 2017)It was not only her, but many people are scared to travel or even go to the public places after seeing these issues happening all around the world. What is even worse, these media that overestimate such a serious issue may cause serious problems. It was proven by psychologist, that exposure to violence affects negatively children and it may cause serious consequences for the rest of the life. The problem is, that children are raised in the world full of violence and insecurity, so they can always expect the worst and just hope that it will not happen. What is more, violence at schools is strongly connected with media and violence presented there. Based on the survey from American high schools, between 20 and 45 percent of students said that they have been beaten up at school, consequently up to 70 percent of students reported as being witness of someone else being bullied. (The Conversation, 2017)But is it really the way we want to live and raise our children?
